Music Bio: Andrea Nixon

Andrea Nixon is a Western Canadian Country music singer-songwriter currently living in Edmonton, Alberta. She brings energy and passion to the stage along with a powerful sense of reflection, imagination and emotional authenticity to her songwriting. She writes lyrics that evoke strong imagery and familiar scenarios depicted in a new light, always bound by a strong message. She is motivated to write and perform by a strong conviction to speak her truth and connect to others in both our joys and sorrows.

Though she is proud to have been compared to such country legends as Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton, she has spent the last few years finding her own voice and honing into the particular perspective she would like to add to the world of country music. Two years ago, after nearly a decade of penning songs at her dining room table, Andrea began working with the incomparable Singer-Songwriter/Producer/Guitarist Bobby Cameron to prepare all her original material for release. She is extremely proud of the album set to drop in 2016.

In January 2015, she independently released her first commercial single “You Didn’t Make Me.” The song received airtime in Edmonton (CFWE and CJSR), Leduc (93.1 The One), Whitecourt (XM 105), Drayton Valley (Big West Country), High River (Sun Country), Kamloops (Country 103) and Owen Sound (Country 93) and was featured by Medicine Hat’s CHAT FM, during their Top 30 countdown. In April, Program Director TJ Collins of Country 103 added the tune to his playlist, describing Andrea Nixon as an “emerging artist.” Andrea thanked Alberta broadcasters in person during a radio tour with on-air interviews and performances in Whitecourt, Drayton Valley and High River and by calling in to discuss the song, its message and her passion for country music with DJs in additional locations. Andrea also shared her personal story on air with Jenn Dalen, host of her stations “Made in Canada” program, which can be heard at:

In April 2015, she became a Regional Semi-Finalist in CBC Searchlight 2015, landing in the top 225 out of the more than 3000 entrants. On May 25th of 2015, she was one of ten Alberta based artists to be awarded a $10,000 music video grant through Telus Storyhive to produce her debut music video with her film partner Justin Brunelle of Moving Artistry Productions. This video featured two hundred extras including many members of Alberta’s music and line dancing community as well as an army of supporters. Watch at:

She was able to accomplish these feats thanks to her incredible fan base for whom the single’s empowering message rang true. Along with her passion for country music, Andrea is an avid supporter of local charity, Little Warriors. As a thank you for her fans support of the single and music video, Andrea organized a charity event in support of Little Warriors, performing a free show at the video’s clothing sponsor, Welsh's Saddlery & Western Wear and selling branded merchandise that she personally designed, with all proceeds going directly to Little Warriors. The tote bags are available online at: http://

She continues to raise both funds and awareness for this organization through radio interviews, public appearances and merchandise. Hot on the heels of the success of “You Didn’t Make Me,” Andrea is preparing to release more singles, and a full album entitled “Diary of a Housewife” in 2016. Andrea has collaborated with some of Edmonton’s best musicians to form her touring band “Andrea Nixon and the Prairie Son.” They are currently performing locally, with plans to tour Alberta in Spring/Summer 2016. Recently, Andrea has received her first nomination for the Edmonton Music Awards , in the category of Music Video of the Year for "You Didn't Make Me."

So says radio:

As a Music Director for most of my 25 years in the radio business, I've listened to a lot of artists come and go. Canadian Country music is so strong at this point with writing and Production. When I first came along to listen to Andrea Nixon and her song “You Didn't Make me,” I was very impressed with the writing and the production and the song quality. The song is unique, and very well written. I think Andrea has what it takes to make a long career in the Music Business. I look forward to hearing more music from this artist.

When I first heard “You Didn’t Make Me”, I found the opening line/chorus to be extremely catchy. The guitar that cuts in stabs hard, and drives the main message of the song in even harder. It is a very well-written song, with some important issues kept in mind. This is what Country music is all about! The song communicates a message very relevant in today’s world. It is aimed at people with self-image & confidence issues, and is intended to empower the troubled. It does a very good job of this, and the video is a nice compliment to the song’s message. The main lines of the chorus (“You didn’t make me, you ain’t gonna break me...”) are told from the perspective of a strong woman who has the courage to stand up to those who might have otherwise pushed her down in life. An important life lesson can be learned here. Andrea Nixon is an artist with a big story to tell, and this song & video is a tiny sneak peek into a big world I can’t wait to explore. She has a strong voice to deliver a big message, and I can’t wait to hear what’s next. Something this particular single brings to the country market that is otherwise lacking in popular music, is the idea of self- empowerment. It’s a refreshing oasis of motivation and in an otherwise degrading & bland market (Bro country, I’m talking about you!).

So says the Producer:

The essence of what makes Andrea Nixon work is the combination of her unique voice and the fact that she draws from the well of all the great traditional country singers. Andrea loves and respects all those legendary singers from Loretta Lynn to Patsy Cline. She stirs this around with her original work that sounds unique and refreshing in today's country market. Andrea’s work ethic is second to none. She's not afraid to take this indy spirit and find a way to move things forward and has proven that over and over again. She respects the process with a personality that makes it fun, engaging and very productive. She just simply has the right attitude to turn this journey in music into a successful career. People who have seen her perform will remember how honest and real she is. How she carries that over into her songs. Her stories are about everyday people dealing and over coming challenges that life throws their way. She takes that realness on the stage and off the stage. There is no acting here, its her life in a song and she wears it proud.

So says the Audience:

Andrea filmed the video for her breakout single "You Didn't Make Me" right here in Holden, and came back to play a show at our theatre and share some originals from this album. If you didn't make it to that show, you missed some truly impressive songwriting. Follow Andrea if you appreciate "real" country music with a positive and uplifting feel and intelligent songcrafting.
